SHAMANIC DRUMMING & JOURNEYING

Chris Faulconer
Chris FaulconerChris Faulconer - is the Founder and Director of the 21st Century Mystery School, located in Pine Mountain, California. After 20 years, designing computer systems for aerospace, she developed a Journeying process combining ancient wisdom and empowerment, assisting individuals to connect to their own inner resources. Chris provides a way for people to journey into the unknown and bring back what is needed for themselves. An ordained minister, having been privileged to study with many traditional people, she has taken on the responsibility of passing knowledge to the next generation. A healer of mind, body and spirit for the past 25 years, Chris is a person full of humor and radiating a joyful presence.
Shamanic Drumming & Journeying - The goal of the Shaman is to connect and attune to the vibration, energy and power of the entire universe; to become familiar with the physical and spiritual guiding forces of the universe and to take action in the physical realm that reflects the reality of the spiritual realm. Journeying is a process by which all people can learn to connect to their source and to walk in wisdom with that source. We will use the drum, that which represents the heartbeat of Mother Earth; and the rattle, that which evokes the vibration of the new and unique, to make each journey an experience that is both otherworldly and grounding.
*This is an experiential course; wear comfortable clothing. Bring a rock the size of an orange or grapefruit and feel free to bring rattles or drums.

TIGER BY THE TAIL—WOMEN ARTISTS OF INDIA TRANSFORMING CULTURE

Elinor W. Gadon
Elinor GadonElinor W. Gadon - co-curator of exhibit initiated by the Women's Studies Research Center, Brandeis University and now traveling to four other universities: Rutgers; Univsersity of Pennsylvania: American University, Washington, D.C.: and University of Miami.
Tiger by the Tail—Women artists of India Transforming Culture - Tiger! displays the work of 17 acclaimed artists whose art embodies the transformative possibilities and highlights the correspondences and counterpoints between the feminist art of India and that of the United States, and the inherent meaning of the differences.
India has been undergoing sweeping social change in the last few decades. One major upheaval is the emerging role of women with a strong voice of their own. This voice of self-expression appears in all domains of life, from economic achievement and political power, to intellectual leadership and more. In India there is a virtual groundswell of urban women's artistic productivity and creativity. Contemporary women artists are exposing the fault lines of their society while working within their collective worldview. They are working within the cultural specificity of the mythology, iconography, and social norms of their society, using their newly won creative freedom to subvert and transform these cultural markers for the empowerment of women.
I will present their work within the context of the artists' lives and the issues of concern for contemporary women in India.

SESSION ONE

WORKSHOP 1A
From Word to Action: The Embodiment of Sufi Poetry

Melinda Krokus, M.Div.
Melinda KrokusMelinda Krokus, M.Div. - is a Sufi Muslim and has been under the spiritual direction of Shaykh Taner Ansari, Pir of the Qadiri Rifa'i Sufi Order, since 1994. She has studied Sufi music and Qur'an recitation in Turkey and is currently a PhD candidate in anthropology and Sufism at Boston University.
From Word to Action: The Embodiment of Sufi Poetry - This workshop will focus on the embodiment of Sufi poetry in voice and movement as a method of encountering Divinity. Rooted in longing and love, Sufi poetry grounds personal and/or global transformation in this primary encounter expressed through words. The workshop will explore how moving from written word to embodied word (also illustrated by Qur'an recitation) can translate into effective action in the world from dramatic acts of hospitality to simple acts of protest. The Sufi poetic legacy is magnificently materialized in books, illuminated manuscripts, painting, martial arts, and architecture, the creation of which are contemplative exercises themselves, and will be briefly explored. We will then bring the poetry to life through movement to and recitation of familiar poets like Rumi and Hafiz and not so familiar ones from Turkey, Persia, and India. The Sufi folk tradition has been to share these pieces in both public and private gatherings (with or without music - we'll do both) during times of social upheaval or crisis, celebration, prayer, or ritual in order to effect change in personal behavior or social policy through closing the gap between words and action.

Through Movement and Ritual
Belly dance has a long tradition as a sacred dance, celebrating the power, grace and strength of women. Over thousands of years, it progressed from the religious sphere, when it was performed in temples, was passed onto the secular in an erotic form, and evolved into a class of professional dancers.
It is now spiraling back to it's roots as a women's sacred dance of power. The specific movements of Belly Dance can positively influence our physical, psychological and spiritual levels of being, through their effects on the endocrine system, musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and energy centers of the body, all with potential healing effects on the physical, psychological and spiritual levels of being. This workshop will feature a slideshow presentation of the history of belly dance and it's therapeutic benefits, followed by an experiential, participatory segment where participants will be taught the sacred shapes belly dance, and enjoy the mesmerizing sounds of Middle Eastern music.

Creating Sacred Spaces in Nature

Sherry Bonder
Sherry BonderSherry Bonder - I discovered myself, spirituality, and community in nature. As an adult, I have developed my own spiritual practice through creating art with natural materials in nature. In my work as a psychotherapist, I have used nature as a medium for self-discovery and community-building.
Creating Sacred Spaces in Nature - The workshop begins with a brief presentation and description of various forms of artistic structures and spaces that can be created in a natural environment, using materials present at the site. Participants are divided into groups that will work together to create an outdoor structure or space that is meaningful to them. Themes may be chosen. Writing Across the Senses - Working Through Creative Blocks to Access the Creative Writer Residing Within

Lori Grace, MFA, MCMHC
Lori GraceLori Grace, MFA, MCMHC - Therapist and college writing teacher since 1991, Lori Grace runs women's writing groups and works with private clients. Trained in counseling and possessing an MFA in writing, she studied, showed, and sold her visual art work in France and is published in The Sun, Earth Star Magazine, and online.
Writing Across the Senses - Working Through Creative Blocks to Access the Creative Writer Residing Within - St Thomas of Aquinas suggests that the only true means to knowledge is through the senses, and the philosopher Jacques Maritain provides a model through which creative artists can access the soul via the senses. Stimulating the five senses has the capacity to act as a kind of totem for our memories and enliven our language. Yet, we all know that when it comes to working with memory and intuition in order to create vivid imagery and concrete examples, sometimes difficult events can still the mind and generate a kind of 'creative' block for anyone involved in the creative process.
Recent historical events have had a negative impact on the ways in which many of us experience the world at large, and as a result, these events may find themselves lodged in the psyche. Whether a block is due to current events, personal trauma, or simple life intervention, our creative work can suffer. As a college writing instructor and a mental health clinician, I have been working with the phenomenon of creative block for the past fifteen years.
Brain research supports the fact that we can develop a livelier and more interesting writing style by exposing ourselves to many sensory experiences. We will laugh, write, and share our work with each other, creating a warm and engaging experience!
*Bring journals

Follow Your Bliss... Using Your Creative Gifts to Transform Your Life After Loss
Sandi Amorello
Sandi AmorelloSandi Amorello - holds a BFA in illustration from the University of the Arts, in Philadelphia. Losing her husband Drew to pancreatic cancer propelled her onto a journey into grief and rediscovery of her own bliss through her art and writing. She owns Silver Crayon Studios in Portland, and lives with her three children in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
Follow Your Bliss... Using Your Creative Gifts to Transform Your Life After Loss -

Part One:
Sharing my story of the loss of my husband, Drew, to pancreatic cancer 5 years ago...and how it propelled me on an unexpected journey into grief, single parenting, and finding my own bliss once again. How I rediscovered my own personal sacred "gifts" (my art and my writing), and used them to heal and grow. How crucial it is to follow your own heart, trust in the universe...be aware... and believe in synchronicity. "Leap and the net shall appear."
Part Two:
Using my ART & WORDS as an example of my own journey and healing process...I help participants to tell their own stories and heal themselves, in the process. Workshop participants do not need to consider themselves "artists." We all have our own unique ways of expressing ourselves. I will be providing a framework in which they can express their own journey through the written word and by illustrating their experience or memory in collage form through the use of and connection to words, images and objects...both "found" and "personal." Participants will be asked to bring in personal objects and images of sentiment if they desire. They will be able to incorporate the actual objects and images, and also have the option of scanning them for use in their creative pieces.
I will be available during the second part of the workshop as a facilitator and helper...allowing participants to focus on their own creative process...while also being there for support, technical and creative assistance, and questions.
Part Three:
"Debriefing" In this final segment...I have the opportunity to reconnect with workshop participants individually to discuss what they have discovered...and what they may be interested in continuing to create to help them on their journey after they leave the weekend conference.
*Bring personal objects and images of sentiment

WORKSHOP 4D
Drawing into Creative Wholeness
Cameron Sesto
Cameron SestoCameron Sesto - Artwork is my path to self-discovery that is reflected in the many exhibitions and juried shows I have been invited to participate in. Since the early 1970's, many pieces have been exhibited such as: Celebrations and Octave of Prayer at MIT which were published as editions of Aperture Magazine, The Shamanic Search for Soul at U Mass Harbor Art Gallery in '93 and my exhibition at the Firehouse Center for the Arts in Newburyport in 2001 entitled Language of the Soul. In 2002 I created the charcoal drawings of bowls used as chapter headings in the book: Wisdom Bowls by Meredith Young-Sowers. I currently facilitate my Drawing into Creative Wholeness workshops (ongoing since 1986) and have the privilege of teaching art to Montessori children from Lower Elementary to Middle School.
Drawing into Creative Wholeness - We will use guided meditation to enter your inner world, bring forth those discoveries onto paper using charcoal, and then discuss our imagery with the group. Drawing with charcoal after meditating gives us a visual expression of our inner experience, which then becomes a symbol of our journey. The images we bring forth are notes to ourselves to later use to create a painting, write a poem, song, story or keep as a private notation. The energy and interplay of the individuals in a group is what enables us to gather the courage and trust ourselves to reach beyond where we are now or where we think we are capable of going on our individual journeys.

"Symbols do not flow from the unconscious to tell us what we already know, but to show us what we have yet to learn."
We, Robert A. Johnson
