Where are classes held?

Classes are held in the Actor's Studio, rooms 5 & 6 at the Tannery Mall in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Enter the West Entrance and follow the signs in the Tannery Hallway that say Anna Smulowitz. You can find directions to the Tannery here or go to http://thewww.tannerymall.com

Do we have class today?

We do not hold classes on holidays. For a list of this years vacation and holiday days, click here. For snow cancellations or other cancellations please check out our Instant News! page. Teachers make individual decisions to rearrange class schedules, so be sure to have their phone number and/or e-mail just in case. You can find that information on the About Our Teachers page.

What should my child wear to class |

Comfortable clothing is best. Play clothes. Girls should wear pants, preferably.

How much does each session cost?
|

The cost for classes is as follows:
- $110.00 for classes 1 hour and less.
- $125.00 for classes 1 hour and more
- 10% discount for siblings

Classes are sorted by age and ability. Please discuss class changes with your teacher.

What age can a child start drama class?
|

The youngest age group that we teach is ages 4-5.

How many children are in each class?
|

There are typically 10-16 children in each class. In the larger classes (12+) each teacher has one assistant.

What kinds of activities do the children do in class? Will they be reading from scripts?

The children do a wide range of activities in class all with an improvisational basis. They will not usually be reading from scripts. For more information on what they do and why, please visit our class philosophy page.

What kind of training do the instructors have? |
 |

Is there one instructor per class?
|

There is usually one instructor and one aide in each class of approximately 15 children.

Do you have a late pick-up policy?
|
 |
Yes. After a 5 minute grace period, late parents will incur a $5.00 fee for each minute of child care.

What kind of child enjoys acting lessons?
|
 |
Any child who is creative, expressive and/or enjoys play acting or creative dramatic play at home and school will take right to drama class. Also, any child who's teacher has noted their dramatic talent will do very well in our classes.

Does my child have to enroll in class in order to participate in a play? |
 |
We offer roles in our productions to our students first. If a specific part cannot be filled by one of our students, we will look outside our classes.

Does every child who auditions get a part?
|
 |
No. Unfortunately we cannot cast everyone in every play. We do try and put on enough plays so that every child has a chance at a part. But whether they get a part or not, auditions are vital experience for budding actors and we encourage all of our students to try and strengthen their audition skills.

Are there recitals or a peek week for children who are not ready to be in a play?
|
 |
Each individual teacher decides whether or not to hold a peek week. Please see your teacher for more details. Or e-mail her. We are not always aware of teachers' class plan changes.

How much of a time commitment is a play?
|
 |
There are approximately 3-5 rehearsals weekly, held in various locations. 2 of those rehearsals are typically on Saturdays and Sundays. The week before opening night, there are rehearsals each night. Dress Rehearsal evening is often late, and can go until 11:00 or 12:00.

Productions are held in a variety of places:
- The Actors Studio, in the Tannery,Newburyport
- The Yellow School for the Arts, Byfield
- St. Paul's Church, Newburyport
- Rocky Hill Meeting House, Amesbury

Does my child need to sing as well as act?
|
 |
No. We'll be doing an even number of dramas and musicals each year.
